As part of the 90th anniversary celebration of the Azerbaijan National Museum of Art, the exhibition entitled “Dialogue of Cultures: Kazakhstan – Azerbaijan” presents nearly 30 paintings by Kazakh artists representing different generations. For the first time during the independence period, the Azerbaijan National Museum of Art has turned to its collections containing works from former Soviet republics and is exhibiting eight graphic and painting works by renowned Kazakh artists. The project aims to promote an understanding of Kazakhstan’s artistic heritage within a broad cultural and historical context.
The exhibition prominently features works by artists who stood at the origins of the national school of painting — Abylkhan Kasteyev, Moldakhmet Kenbayev, Kanafiya Telzhanov, Nurbek Tansykbayev, and Maria Lizogub. Their works organically combine the academic tradition with figurative thinking rooted in nomadic culture. In the works of Aisha Galimbayeva, the first professional Kazakh woman artist, as well as Sabur Mambeyev, Salikhitdin Aitbayev, and Shaimardan Sariyev, greater attention is paid to the inner meaning of the image and its symbolic and philosophical dimensions.
The creativity of Abylkhan Kasteyev, one of the founders of Kazakh visual art, holds particular significance for the museum collection. Since 1984, the museum has borne the name of this outstanding artist, who was the first professional Kazakh painter and possessed an innate talent. Remaining faithful to nature, he created realistic works of art.
The exhibition will continue until August 31.
