From February 3 to 7, 2025, a project was implemented at the Azerbaijan National Museum of Art, focusing on the scientific research and conservation of British artworks. The project was carried out within the framework of cultural cooperation with the British Council.
The scientific research and training were conducted by renowned British painting conservation expert Rupert Featherstone. From 2001 to 2008, Rupert Featherstone was the head of painting conservation for the British Royal Collection at Windsor Castle, and from 2008 to 2021, he served as the head of conservation at the Fitzwilliam Museum under the University of Cambridge, as well as the director of the Hamilton Kerr Institute.
As part of the project program, studies were conducted on the scientific research of the British collection of the Azerbaijan National Museum of Art, identifying key aspects crucial for its preservation and assessing its current condition. Productive discussions and joint training sessions with the museum’s Scientific Restoration Department staff are expected to make a significant contribution to the museum's future activities.
Additionally, recommendations and proposals were made for preparing works from the British collection of the Azerbaijan National Museum of Art for exhibition, and the final results of the project were discussed.
During the final meeting with museum staff, Rupert Featherstone expressed his great satisfaction with the project, highlighting the richness and uniqueness of Azerbaijani art. He also stated his willingness to contribute to similar significant initiatives in the future.
On the last day of the project, as part of a cultural program organized for him, Rupert Featherstone visited the Heydar Aliyev Center and the Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum.
