As part of the Azerbaijan Culture Days held in Tajikistan, an exhibition dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the prominent artist Mirza Gadim Iravani opened at the National Museum of Tajikistan.
The exhibition features a display from the Azerbaijan National Museum of Art titled “Mirza Gadim Iravani: At the Crossroads of Eastern and Western Artistic Styles.”
The core of the exhibition is formed by works of the great master preserved in the Azerbaijan National Museum of Art, as well as examples of visual and decorative-applied art created in the Qajar style, reflecting the era in which he lived.
On display are graphic drawings from the mature period of Mirza Gadim Iravani’s work, including Portrait of Fath-Ali Shah, Portrait of a Noble Lady, Portrait of Qajar Prince Vajiullah Mirza, and Soldier. Also exhibited is The Rose and the Nightingale, a popular motif in Qajar painting, alongside similar themed graphic works by other prominent 19th-century Azerbaijani artists — Usta Ganbar Karabagi and Mir Mohsun Navvab.
Copies of the unique murals decorating the Sheki Khan Palace, a jewel of 18th-century Azerbaijani architecture, highlight the dominant artistic and aesthetic ideals of that time. Items such as shields, helmets, armguards, and other weaponry displayed in the exhibition reflect the heroic spirit of the period.
Among Mirza Gadim Iravani’s works preserved in the Azerbaijan National Museum of Art are exceptional items such as a prayer book titled Davat bearing the personal seal of the well-educated Bahman Mirza, intricately decorated pen cases (kalamdans), a narrative carpet titled Nadir Shah, and a finely crafted arkhalig (traditional outer garment) — all of which capture the spirit, taste, and courtly aesthetics of their time.
